A Busy (Late) October: Screenings Ahoy!

Long time no post (expect, at some point, a recap of a busy summer of screenings, including London Australian Film Festival returning to its summer slot, a bonus Q&A screening of Jaydon Martin’s excellent working class docufiction Flathead, AND a very special event with the one and only, David Wenham).

In the meantime, some belated news about things I have coming up in the latter half of this month, as I host two special screenings for KCL Film Studies (Chilean animation tonight, an Aussie WWI doc on Sat), before heading south-west for Ozploitation and Aussie heist noir.

TONIGHT (15/10): KCL Film Studies and the Embassy of Chile present a very special retrospective screening with Chilean animator Tomas Welss. As well as a selection of his films and an extended Q&A discussion, Tomas will be giving a live demonstration of his unique hand-drawn animation style!

SATURDAY (18/10): KCL Film Studies present a screening of a new documentary, BY FAR KAYMAKCHALAN, which uncovers the fascinating story of Australian and New Zealanders (and others) serving alongside Serbian forces during WWI, followed by a Q&A with historian Bojan Pajić.

On October 24/25, the fine folks at Forbidden Worlds Film Festival are dedicating their annual Big Scream fiesta to all things Ozploitation, and throwing some real treats up on the aptly named Bristol Megascreen as part of The Big Scream! Six Feet Down Under.

The fun and games begin with with the magnificent Long Weekend (1978), kicking off a wild and wicked ride through psychological inheritance horror (Next of Kin, 1982), gruesome suburban body horror (Body Melt, 1993), outback survival/revenge horror (Fair Game, 1986), and sci-fi/vampire WTFery (Thirst, 1979), before rounding out with everyone’s favourite anti-Babe, Razorback (1984) – that’ll do, pig!

They’ve also been kind enough to invite me to introduce some of the films, which means I’ll be flouncing around all weekend. I mean, just get an eyeful of this trailer:

My busy late October ends with Film Noir Fest in Weston-super-Mare, and their strand on ‘Heist Noir’, which includes a rare UK screening of Bruce Beresford’s gritty heist thriller, MONEY MOVERS on November 1st.

In case you’re wondering: in November, I’ll mostly be lying down.
