New Writing: Where to Begin with Warwick Thornton (for BFI website)

As Warwick Thornton’s brilliant third feature The New Boy arrives in UK cinemas, I’ve put together a primer on where to begin if you’re new to Thornton’s work, which spans drama, documentary, television and moving image art.

Just like my earlier piece on Where to Begin with David Gulpilil, this has been published as part of The British Film Institue’s ‘Where to Begin’ series, which aims to introduce audiences to a new star or filmmaker, and offers tips on where to start, where to go next, and what to avoid.

As the BFI’s own blurb puts it:

As his new film, the Cate Blanchett drama The New Boy, arrives in cinemas, we catch you up with a filmmaker who has redefined Australian cinema in recent years: Indigenous director Warwick Thornton.

As you might expect, articles like Where to Begin with Warwick Thornton are fairly subjective endeavours, so feel free to let me know where you’d suggest people start, either in the comments below or via Twitter.
